Biafra: Don’t condemn IPOB – Tinubu tells Nigerians-VANGUARD NIGERIA

National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former governor of Lagos State, Bola Tinubu, has said Nigerians should not condemn but listen and understand the agitations by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

He said this while delivering the Keynote speech at the 2017 Annual Dinner of the King’s College Old Boys’ Association (KCOBA) at King’s College, Lagos.

The APC leader, who said the cry for separation had gained traction among average people due to the chronic failure of government to meet basic aspirations, however, warned against any attempt to split the country.

Tinubu noted that gargantuan challenges were facing the country but explained that they were not enough to call for the dismantling of the federation at a time some parts of the world were taking advantage of integration.

He said: “It is a rather curious lapse that a nation with such diversity as ours has not taken the time to give our legal marriage its proper functional underpinning. In other words, we all lined up to call ourselves Nigerian without gathering to discuss what it meant.

“Thus, we inhabit a nation that has not sufficiently defined its governance. We may be defined by political borders and boundaries but we have not glued ourselves to collective purpose and vision. Too many of us are born in Nigeria but not of it.

“Thus, our society is not a collective enterprise as important to each of us as our own personal endeavor. It is but a platform, an arena, to claim whatever one can by whatever means available. In too many ways we resemble a wrestling match instead of the nation we were ‎meant to become.

“Thus, we argue over matters that long ago should have been settled. The longer such fundamental questions fester, the more extreme become the proposed answers.

“Thus, we have people clamoring for secession in one part of the country and the murmur of such a course grows stronger in other sections.

“These other areas resent that some have advocated secession. Blame and recrimination become the political currency. Statesmanship falls in short supply. The dominant urge is to confront instead of reconcile.

“It would be wrong to mistake this for a tempest in a teapot. If not careful, we may be tossed about like a teapot in a tempest.

“We must listen to what is being said so that we can determine what is really meant.

“Let us be frank. Many who cry separation do so because their personal ambitions will be better served by such a thing. They believe they will have greater chance at political power under a different arrangement. Yet the cry for separation has gained traction among average people; this is due to the chronic failure of government to meet basic aspirations.

“If over the years, government had delivered on the promise of growth, prosperity, and justice, those calling for such extreme remedies would be but a small fringe of little consequence.

“Our task is not to condemn but to listen and understand. I care not at all for this proposed solution. But I dare not discount the concerns and problems that have led many people into advocating such a thing.

“Here, I want to plainly state my position. I am a firm believer in Nigeria. I believe this land will become a great nation and a leader among other African nations. We can resolve our dysfunctions in a manner that will make this nation rise as a standard of decency, justice and prosperity for all Nigerians.

“So many excellent people have devoted themselves, even given their very lives, to give life to this nation. I dare not cast aside their hardy and brave work as if it were nothing. Many things we now enjoy and see as good are due to these people. We have benefited from their labor and sacrifice.

“Being more pragmatic, separating the nation into small pieces resolves nothing and creates additional problems. The world marches toward integration. Europe, America, Asia seek trade and commercial pacts that will make them more integrated markets. Notwithstanding Brexit, the EU grows more integrated in the functions of governance by the day. Thus, while nations more powerful and developed than us seek to pool their wealth and might, some of us seek to whittle this nation into smaller pieces.

“Such a thing would make us more vulnerable to outside influences. We would forfeit our rightful place on the world stage and as a leader of this continent.

“Moreover, not every split solves a problem. The political mentality, either good or bad, that defined a group before the split will remain after the divide. If one is imbued with factionalism, that perspective will remain even when the immediate problem is surmounted. Division will manifest differently, but manifest it will.

“A new factional bigotry will arise to replace the old. The cycle of tension and unrest will take its inexorable toll. Just ask the people of South Sudan if their woes ended when they left Sudan.

“When your heart is geared toward division, you will seek it within a single tribe, even a single family. The gossamer of ethnic unity will be ripped apart by sub-ethnic squabble. An angry man outside his home remains angry inside it as well and a thief steals from both stranger and friend.

“Driven by such a mentality, even someone you once called your brother becomes a nuisance, then a burden, and ultimately your enemy in short order.

“Thus, I oppose talk of break-up and all other exotic political arrangements tantamount to it. That I am a foe of disunity does not mean I have blinded myself to the truth that our nation is in need of great repair.

“We all see the nation for what it is. Some look further to see the nation for what it is not and they rush to condemn it.

“I choose to see the nation for what it can be and thus seek to nurture and cultivate it so that this Nigeria may bring forth the fullest blossoming of its riches, resources and ingenuity of its diverse people.”

Exposed:France allegedly denies funding Nnamdi Kanu and IPOB(video included)

France, through the French embassy in Nigeria has denied warehousing funds belonging to the Indigenous People of Biafra and its leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

Political Counsellor, Claude Abily of the Embassy of France in a statement reacted to claims by Lai Mohammed, Nigeria’s minister of information, alleging that IPOB had its funds in France through which it funds its activities.

“The Embassy of France was surprised by the statement made yesterday by the Minister of Information and Culture indicating that the “financial headquarters” of IPOB were in France”.

“We don’t have any knowledge of a particular presence of IPOB in France and the Nigerian authorities never got in touch with the Embassy on this point. We stand ready to examine any information which could support this statement. Furthermore, we would like to reiterate that France actively cooperates with Nigeria in the field of security and that we strongly support the unity of the country” t he statement said

Igbos i have turned a new leaf support my presidential ambition,i cannot win without you-okorocha

Igbos pls forgive me and support my presidential ambition,i cannot win without you-okorocha begs in tears

The embattled Governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha, has raised an alarm over the plot by the Ingenious People of Biafra, IPOB, to spoil the chances of him and other Igbos, from becoming President in 2023.

Okorocha made this disclosure in an exclusive interview with Vanguard Newspaper, on Friday.

Post-Nigeria recalls that Okorocha before now, has been nursing his Presidential ambition, having contested in many Presidential primaries, both in the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and the All Progressives Congress, APC.

While speaking on the nuisance constituted by IPOB, he said: “The issue of IPOB, whether we want to believe it or not, IPOB is not good for the South-East, and it is not the best way for us to complain about marginalisation to the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“There are better ways; the IPOB way is too primitive. If IPOB must do a thing like that, it should have changed the name and fought the way Ijaw youths fought, Arewa youths fought, and they would have made more impact. For everything that comes from the Igbo man, we love to go to the extreme.

“Now you want to separate yourself from Nigeria, meanwhile, South-South will not go with you, Edo, Rivers, will not go with you. If you cut us off here now as South-East, if I need to go to Rivers State, I will go and ask for passport and visa, and we are keeping quiet to say this.

“If there is a crisis now, there is no Hausa man in Igbo land who has a duplex, there is no Yoruba man who has a room and parlour or an N20 million investment in Igbo land, but Igbo have trillions of naira virtually everywhere.

“The same people are asking for secession. If Igbos are asked to go, what happens? They would lose their property, and all of us are keeping quiet, supporting IPOB! It was very childish, and those behind this should stop, that is my advice. South-South has produced the President, South-West has produced a President and Vice President, the North has produced many Presidents, it is hoping that one day in the next shift, by whatever arrangement, the next people that should be considered is the South-East by Nigeria’s sharing formula. So, where are we in our wisdom and the intelligence? That is my position on IPOB; my advice is that Igbos should change their style, and condemn IPOB in a manner that should be done, and let us flow with the rest of Nigeria for now, because we shall benefit more than anyone else.” read more about biafra below

The Anambra State Governor, Willie Obiano, has warned the Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, to steer clear from the State, ahead of November Gubernatorial election. Obiano who spoke in Awka, the State capital, observed that security reports available to him revealed that those behind the threat to stop the forthcoming election are from outside the State. Recall, Kanu had during a rally of IPOB members at Ekwulobia in Aguata Local Government Area, on Sunday, renewed his call on the people to boycott the forthcoming election in the State.

In a swift reaction, Obiano urged the people not to be disturbed by election boycott threats, but to be prepared for such persons, should they attempt any such ill-advised intention to disrupt peace during the election “We cannot allow somebody called Nnamdi Kanu from another State, to invade our peaceful State, and issue unwelcome directives to us. “We will not fold our hands and watch such an individual motor in people from Abia, Enugu, and other places, to disrupt order in our State. “Ignore the empty threats. Go about your lawful businesses, and sleep with both eyes closed. I will keep watch over you with my two eyes open. I will let anyone who dares us know I am from Aguleri.” The Governor called on the people to take the threats as empty, saying that the majority of those at Nnamdi Kanu’s rally at Ekwulobia, on Sunday, were people from Abia, Enugu, and other places, who should not be part of the election in the State

Now we know you are truly from hausa-fulani,you have disgraced us enough-Ohaneze Ndigbo

- Imo state governor Rochas Okorocha's statement that Igbo people have the worst political strategy has drawn ire

- Ohanaeze Ndigbo have said Governor Okorocha is wrong in his statements

- The governor has also been accused of never identifying with the Igbo cause in his actions and speech

Ohanaeze Ndigbo has criticized Imo state governor, Rochas Okorocha, for saying that Igbo people play the worst politics in Nigeria.

watch fresh videos from biafra agitation>>

Recently, Okorocha had called for a change in strategy if the southeast was to attain political relevance in Nigeria’s political space.

In response, Ohanaeze challenged Okorocha to carry out a critique of his remarks and come up with a more appreciable opinion.

According to Punch, the national publicity secretary of the body, Prince Uche Achi Okpaga, in a statement issued in Abakaliki, Ebonyi said: “Every human being (or race) is affected or influenced by his cultural, religious and social backgrounds. Ndigbo are no exception.

“The republican and egalitarian nature of Ndigbo distinguishes them and, as well influences them in all ramifications.

“To say that Ndigbo play the worst politics without first juxtaposing it viz-a-viz these inalienable factors that influence them may not be correct.

“I advise whoever is of this opinion to x-ray it once again and profess a more appreciable opinion.”
Also the Eastern Consultative Assembly (ECA) and Igbo National Council (INC) accused Okorocha of never identifying with Igbo cause.

The ECA secretary, Evangelist Ugochukwu-Uko said:“My brother, we are 100 percent in agreement with Okorocha. We agree that Igbo made terrible mistake by selecting someone like him as their leader.

“We agree with him. If our people play good politics, they would have looked for people who have our interests at heart. The tragedy of the Igbo nation is that the so-called leaders do not have the interest of the people at heart.”

National president of INC, Comrade Godsent, stated that: “Well, by our own understanding, the Igbo play politics of maturity based on principle. I want to ask, does it mean that we play worst politics by refusing to be political prostitutes, jumping from one party to another? Does that portray us as worst politicians?
“Okorocha’s statement should not be taken serious because the governor has not only lost his credibility among Ndigbo but acceptance.”
Univworgers earlier reported that the governor had described Igbo people as those that play the worst politics in Nigeria, when he condemned the activities of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

He added that IPOB has succeeded in creating distrust for the Igbo people among other tribes by their agitation for secession.

A human rights group in Nigeria, the Centre for Human Rights and Social Justice (CHRSJ) has called on President Muhammadu Buhari not to turn deaf ear into the wise advice of former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo that the Federal Government under his watch should dialogue with the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) on their agitation, saying that only genuine referendum were the best option to put the matter to the rest once and for all, adding that Nigeria government should learn from Brexit in 2016.
The rights group in a statement issued to US, strongly condemned the militarization of the zone by President Buhari’s Soldiers, describing the action as the act of dictatorial tendency on the part of Buhari government as a way to return the country back to the dark days of Military era, which people of good will should not allow it to stand.

CHRSJ in that statement signed and issued to US by its Executive Chairman, Comrade Adeniyi, Alimi Sulaiman on Monday, maintained that the member of the group (IPOB) did not commit any offence that could warrant invasion of IPOB leader’s house by the Military, frowning at the way and manner the Nigeria Army declared IPOB as a terror group.

The group maintained that there was no alternative to dispute resolution than dialogue and this is high time for Buhari to dialogue with the leaders and members of the IPOB as being postulated by the former President, maintaining that only true federal structure could suppress ethnic agitations in the land.

It said, “Any government in Nigeria without restructuring is deceptive. Only restructuring of the nation can bring an enduring democracy. There is nobody in the country today who does not appreciate the need to restructure this nation, only those who are mischievous today would not want the restructuring of the country.
“Since Muhammadu Buhari serve actively in despotic Sanni Abacha regime, there was no different in the current Buhari administration. If we have a better Nigeria, we would not have waked up and seen democratic government being dragged military men to confront unarmed members of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).We are just dreaming that there is change, nothing actually has changed. Nigeria is gloomy because there is nothing organically different from the past as Buhari’s government is nothing but hypocritical”.
It therefore called on Buhari led Federal government to withdraw military troops from the South-East as the military men should dissipate their energy on Boko Haram in the North-East and Fulani Herdsmen, adding that the Federal Government should tender public apology to the good people of South-East over the unconstitutional military onslaught.

“When a government mobilizes its entire resources, that is Military and otherwise to suppress a peaceful agitation of an unarmed people, it means such government is driving the country towards dictatorial tendency. Nigeria can only survive as a true federation”, it submitted.

Opinion: Will Igbos allow Asari Dokubo to become their first president if Biafra is actualised?

Editor’s note: The clamour for Biafra republic by the Nnamdi Kanu led Independent People of Biafra and its insistence that the next governorship election in Anambra should not hold have continued to generate reactions from Nigerians both locally and internationally.

In an article sent to NGREPORTERS.COM.NG, Ipusu A. Austine, writes about the clamour for Biafra republic by some Igbos and explains why war should be averted at all cost in Nigeria.

I was not there between 1967 and 1970 during the first civil war, but my father, a gallant troop of the Nigerian army now retired was there. Although he hardly retraced the narrative of that ugly experience, but the little I have gathered from him, gives me more discouragement about war on a general note.

At least two decades before I was born and now several decades after I came into planet earth, each time the story resurfaces, it seems like it happened just few years ago.

The Information Minister, Lai Mohammed, has vented his anger against the British Government, for allegedly frustrating efforts towards closing down Radio Biafra, which is sited in the United Kingdom, UK.

Lai Mohammed said this during a News Conference, held at the Presidential Villa, in Abuja, on Wednesday.
Lai Mohammed however, decried that despite all the damage done by Radio Biafra, the British government was hiding under the right to freedom of expression.

“Who does not know that the IPOB internal radio is located in London? We know the diplomatic moves we have been taking and approaching the UK, all the damages it (Radio Biafra) has done, but they don’t see it that way; for them (the British government), it is about freedom of expression.

“If we have a person in Nigeria openly soliciting arms to come and fight the UK, what would you think of? Would you consider that freedom of expression? And this is a country that also has had a history, what did Iraq do to be labelled a terrorist organisation? They were planting bombs, they were fighting the British army.

“I don’t want any diplomatic row, we know for a fact where the funding is coming from, and we are going to stop them, but it is difficult to stop them, and we have been working on it and we will not stop,” he said.

Adesina ‘Can’t Confirm Or Deny’ Whether Buhari Endorsed IPOB Ban(CONFUSION IN ASO ROCK)

The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina, says he is unaware of whether President Muhammadu Buhari okayed the declaration of the Indigenous People of Biafra as a terrorist organisation.

Mr Adesina said this in response to questions he was asked during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Tuesday. Secessionist group IPOB had been declared a terrorist group by the Nigerian military on Friday. Hours later, governors of the South-East proscribed the activities of the group.

The development which came amid increased tension in the South East and in some parts of the North has generated a debate. While some have defended the decision of the governors and the declaration by the military some others have criticised.

Among the critics are Senate President Bukola Saraki who declared the declaration and ban unconstitutional in a statement on Monday.
